Whilst Paul McCartney is, justifiably, a highly respected musician, regardless of his failing ability to perform as he once did he seems to be wheeled out at practically every major national event and the coronation, something that will be beamed around the world, appears to be next on the list.

Should he be invited to perform - or should it finally be acknowledged that he really is past his sell-by date?

NJ // I reckon Elvis Presley only just manages to scrape into the category of a "half decent Karaoke singer."//

You cannot be serious.
If he does perform, and it's not a cruel attempt by the Metro to get the AB folk riled up, I wonder what he would sing.

I mean, presumably not "Yesterday" in the circumstances.
Maybe "The Long and Winding Road" (to be king)
He probably IS past it to sing the early Beatles stuff.
Most likely stop short of 'Revolution'.

I may be light hearted about the Beatles, Barsel, but about EP I am deadly serious. In fact I have heard some far better Karaoke singers, most of them drunk.

I didn't think they'd allow drunken contestants on X Factor :-/
> To me Tom Jones would be a great choice. Great voice, same generation as the King and can adapt to all genres of music

And he's not a paedophile ;) ...

Not that we know of.............................
I agree it should be HRH choice but PM - pleeeease no, he is so awful these days my toes curl in embarrassment. I'm surprised his own don't.
Tom Jones yes if it's someone from that era, he can still sing very well.

And Douglas - you crack me up, love it!!
Wasn't it the Three Degrees that Charles liked?
I don’t think he did anything great once the McCartney/Lennon partnership ended.

‘Hey Jude’ would get the crowd singing but I can’t see much more than that.
If Paul McCartney is performing I won't be watching. Never did like him. Same for Cliff Richard. Whilst I like Tom Jones, not him either.
I'll not be watching whoever performs.
Paul McCartney is definitely past his best, but there again so is Charles. I don't grudge the two old has-beens their moment of glory.
He would probably insist on singing Hey Jude yet again.

I would vote to have Mick Jagger instead. I think the Stones' music has stood the test of time better.
Gawd, save the king.
‘ I think the Stones' music has stood the test of time better’

Maybe because they’re still going?
Funnily enough I didn't used to notice the Stones much when I was younger. Now though I'm bored by Beetles music, and some I positively dislike. However I am appreciating some of the Stones music more now.
Enjoy it while you can Hopkirk, eventually it will be The Last Time
When I'm sixty four
I agree with Hopkirk. I always did like the Stones best and liked other groups more than the Beatles.
