OK Folks -what do you think is the greatest ever record never to reach number one in Britain.I`ll start the ball rolling by saying mine is Fairytale of New York(although of course on the 18th there`s a chance to put that right-get buying!!) by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl(RIP)

Did "Up the Junction" get to number one? If not, I'll choose that

Got to be:

Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields by The Beatles for me!

Ultravox~ Vienna held off by Shaddap ya face by Joe Dolce!!
I know its naff but has to be Lulu, To Sir with Love. Love that record.
Losing My Religion By REM got to the heady heights of No 19!!
David Essex, 'Rock On', I believe it reached No2

Penny lane/strawberry fields forever.

or even

Londons calling

Heartbreak Hotel by Elvis Presley (highest position number 2). Although not his first hit, it made people take notice of the greatest pop star of all time.
What about Pinball Wizard by the Who or Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan, mind you they were both 1969 and the competition was pretty fierce!
