I read once that his guitar style was influenced by the fact that he couldn't do barre chords very well.
Loved the Animals. Had a greatest hits album (in fact I’ve probably still got it.....somewhere).
Always liked the Animals, too.
My Uncle taught me to play House of The Rising Sun on piano. He used to play and sing it on guitar. RIP Hilton Valentine.

Thanks Tigger I never heard that version before.
RIP Hilton
I like Nina Simone's version the best!
Patsy, House of the Rising Sun was about the first I learnt on guitar :-)
Loved the Animals - RIP Hilton.
The opening of House of the Rising Sun is an iconic moment in popular music. Not their song, of course, but they made it their own.
Pixie. I can play it on my guitar too, (in my own sort of way) :-) That song means a lot to me, as my Uncle taught me a lot about music and played this song a lot when I was a teenager. Sadly, he is no longer with us.
Awww. Quite nostalgic for me as well.... I didn't realise it wasn't theirs, Jimf.
Animals and Kinks, my two fav bands from the age of about 7 to well into my teens.
RIP Hilton
True, it may not have been their song, but Hilton did write the opening riff.
