Oh yes, for some reason that song brings tears to my eyes.
I don't knw what it is, I guess partly the amazing production and partly Brian Wilson's words and vocals. It's as near to a perfect song as I can imagine.
Agreed, Mozz, though it's Carl on lead vocals.
Dave Greenfield of the Stranglers was to punk/new wave what Ray Manzarek of the Doors was to the sixties. Both of them organist/keyboard maestros.
Though he was famously quoted as saying he'd never heard of The Doors back in the day!
Is it really Jim? I've been living a lie!
Sure is!

Many early reviewers drew comparisons with Ray Manzarek yet you’ve always maintained that you hadn’t listened to the Doors before joining the Stranglers. So, who were your main influences?

The only tracks by the Doors I knew were Light My Fire & Riders on the Storm. Before I joined my main influences were probably Jon Lord (Deep Purple) & then Rick Wakeman (Yes).
Seems he was being a wee bit disingenuous,Roy.His musical style was a million more times Manzarek than either Lord or Wakeman. Both of whom were more glam style rather than the pure musicianship of Raymond Douglas M.
Why was that disingenuous? You can only be inspired by who your exposed to. If he came from a family who loved Prog or Hard Rock, he'd have heard more of Yes or Deep Purple than he might of other bands.

I can hear similarities with Manzarek too, but they could be coincidental.
My white copy of Walk on By had an excellent long keyboard solo which reminded me of the one in Riders on the Storm.
