Complete except for 2 viz 8down (8) Doubt at heart replaced by rise of mostly harmful foolish idealism ?U?X?TRY and 19 across (5) Homeric character burying the author's backward roots E?Y?A. I am also not sure if I have picked the right alternative for 7Down I have JELL but it could be JEEL (Clue is - Come together has letters regularly spaced in 'joo joo eyeball' and so far as I can discern either word could fit - could do with some help here please!

Well according to Chambers ETYMA is a true origin ie root so that will do me. Thank you once again. Do you think I have made the right decision regarding 7 down - the JEEL is of course Scots but there are 2 "e"s in the clue as well as 2 "L"s
The goddess Ate is mentioned by Homer in the Iliad so put that name outside 'me' and put it all backwards.
