I`m listening to local radio at the mo. That iconic song Boys of Summer by Don Henley is playing but it`s not Don Henley it`s by some girlie. Why do people think they can do better than the original? There are some songs that should just be left alone (It`s My Life by Talk Talk is another one that comes to mind - it`s been tried but not sucessfully)

"The Tower Of Song" by Leonard Cohen is often in the "best 100 Songs of All Time" type lists.

Although I can tolerate the Marianne Faithfull cover, the recent Tom Jones effort has to be considered an abomination by any standard. It is utterly banal.
Anything by Tom Jones is utterly banal imo.
Thank you for that andy - That was interesting - as they say - you're never too old to learn
You're welcome granny.

At the time I heard about it (from Simon Bates of all people!) I thought I'd get the album - but was about £20 on import, then a few months later, I found it in a 'remainder' bin for £3! Result. You would not believe that one song could sound so different so many times. My fave is the Beatnix - the notion that Stairwway would fit into a I Wanna Hold Your Hand / Twist And Shout time signature seems impossible, but it does! See link and enjoy!

Check out the Australian Doors' version - put to a cleverly edited Doors film - love it!

The only cover I like is Tears for Fears, Mad World by Gary Jules.
a really good song ought to be able to survive any sort of cover version.
The totally brilliant original...

Talking Back to the Night.

Excellent original by Steve Winwood.

Even better as a cover by Joe Cocker.
Much as I love Annie, both solo and with Dave, she really added nothing to this...

Lol! Lisa beat me to it!! :-) There are so many to choose from. Beverly Knight's verision of 'Piece of My Heart' was appalling!
An unutterably beautiful Peter Hammill solo track...

Every fibre of my being is telling me that this must be awful, but I actually rather like it... :-)

I think that one of the alternative meanings of the word 'cover' (that used in livestock breeding) has a kernel of truth.
