is it just what you are habituated to? I'm thinking for example of Arab waily type music that i would never listen to for pleasure, Or the african clicky type music or typically greek music - all things i would (and i would suggest not a lot of english people) not listen to willingly. A

I prefer all those sorts of music - I love the Middle Eastern and North African music - trying listening to the last Nasrat Fateh Ali Khan.

It sounds different to western ears because they use different musical scales and intervals.
that should be ^ LATE Nusrat etc.

hmm, perhaps you two are just an exception - if this type of music was well liked here, you would hear it on the radio (mainstream) or in the charts

ps trim - that's what i mean by habituated - you listen to it regularly, and you like it. therefore is it just because i DON'T listen to it regularly (thank god) i can't like it
I think you've probably answered your own question there bednobs.

and also, i am not really referring to individuals as such. For example, i had to listen to our local asian station the other day because a friend of mine was being interviewed. While i was waiting to hear the interview, a lot of music i am very unaccustomed to listening to was on and to my ear it was just awful. However "asians" per se must like it as it's on the local asian station
Question Author
good :) it just seemed like it, but i was wrong.
It's what people's ears become attuned to, bednobs - and I can't stand all this rap stuff myself, music of other cultures uses interesting local authentic instruments, it's not all computer generated.

I think initially a lot of our tastes stem from what we're exposed to, and then we take it from there. I like african and greek music and I like music that uses influences from other countries as I find a lot of pop voices all sound the same to me, (everyone on X-factor, regardless of talent, ends up sounding the same to me)... However, that said, you will never convince me that jazz is anything less than 'musical Auditing' as the great line goes, and I was exposed to a lot of jazz as a kid. And if it's free form jazz I may well just shoot myself...
Auditing = VV@nking
LOL china, that gives a whole new meaning to the end of year audit!
No one ever had a satisfactory end of year audit!

(Sorry bednobs).
