Help with Eighties song title

Bit of a long shot but here goes.. I heard a song on the radio today which is driving me crazy but I can't remember the lyrics. I'm sure it was out in the eighties and has the lines, 'all these dreams and understandings' and 'in America..' It was sung by a guy but also a woman at some points in the song. Any ideas would be welcome!
