i have a 2001 registered vw golf. why is the airbag fault light coming on

Best get it to a VW dealer ASAP. These things have a small explosive charge inside them and you really don't want that going off when driving along !

It would have to be an exceptional cicumstance for the above to happen.  It is usually the other way round - if the airbag warning is on, potentially it might not go off in an accident.  Probably best to get it checked out all the same though, probably just a loose wire.
