Someone knocked into me in the snow last winter and the impact smashed my front registration plate. I went to Halfords who made and fitted a new plate for me. Today someone told me that my plate isn't legal because it only has the registration number and it should have some sort of marking at the bottom to say where it was made/where the car came from, as the original plate on the rear of the car does.

Is this true?

They should now have the postcode and plate makers licence number along the bottom of them.
"It is also a requirement that the organisation who made up the plate show their name and postcode on the plate to aid tracing of the production of false plates and of the individual who purchased the plate. This is normally shown in the centre at the bottom of the plate. This was introduced in 2001 when the new character style and two digit year identifier came into force, but applies to all registration plates made up after that date regardless of the year of the vehicle."

That's odd then. How do Halfords bypass that? They made it and they knew it was going on my car as they fitted it. Shouldn't they have known it needed this information?
Sounds like they should have....
lol, I just looked at the plates I had made by Halfords very recently ... nothing on those either.
You'll never get done for it tho .. So long as the plate uses the proper characters on a proper backing plate.
I print my front plates out on the PC .. Big plastic sticker. Never had an issue with it, as it's clear and legible .. so it's let by.
Mind you, the girl that made them up did seem to struggle with her alphabet somewhat.

Naughty naughty!! I want my 15 quid back! :o)
That said, I did have to supply almost everything but a DNA sample before they'd make the plates.

I'll just do what you do Al and make my own. In fact I could knock out loads and flog em around the village. Could be a right little money spinner. Or not.

ha ha Naz, they did seem to be on a slightly different planet when they did mine too. It was as if I had just asked them to build me an entire new car.
Took 2 'assistants'. I think one knew A-M and the other had learned N-Z.

Then where is your complaint Naz, that's team work! lol
Milly, it was bugging me so much that I've been outside, lol

Ok, look really closely, bottom-centre of the plate. It does say 'Halfords & their 'number' in very faint reflective letters on the actual backing of the plate.
we had a local crook do that with all this stolen road equipment - essentially he had one legit vehicle as to its VIN number - he then copied it onto the stolen - when the police pulled over a vehicle of his, it cleared.....

What sunk him was burning 2 mln of Devon and Cornwall's heavy road equipment as he had lost the scouring contract. They found 14 vehicles on the same site all carrying the same VIN

He also got done for drugs, blackmail, money laundering and was exempted from holding two customs officials against their will. Obviously a nice guy......

Believe he is on 14 years in Dartmoor or Exeter prisons.....probably out in 5 to 7
You have to get on your hands and knees to see it.
