Hi i have a slightly annoying noise on my mk5 vw golf 1.6 fsi. It's only just started but it seems to be coming from the engine. It's like a little vibrating noise which last for about 3-5 seconds upon start up but then goes. I took it in to the garage and they said it would cost £120 to look at it and they said it could either be the cam chain or cam variator that is making the noise. Has anyone had this problem if so what was the diagnosis?

Cheers all.

Assuming that the garage is reputable, they've already given you the answer...
Cam follower's, the feed to the lobes is either restricted by the build up of sludge or you need what has been stated, the noise you hear, lack of oil until the engine starts to run then the oil circulates.
