The wheel collapsed on my trailer this morning and when I examined it, I found that the bearings had collapsed. I removed the wheel and the hub, and the inner bearing is still intact, however, the outer bearing has completely collapsed and the part which is left behind is solid so I am unable to remove it. Can anybody suggest how I can remove it, I have thought about heating it up but don't know whether this will work

A few years ago I had the same problem.. towed it into the garage and the very ancient mechanic knocked out all the loose bit's...to leave an outer shell lodged solidly in the hub.
He then went all the way round the face of the shell with the arc welder...running a continous bead of weld.
He then told me to put the kettle on. When I made the tea we sat down, and before we could start our tea....at the other end of the workshop... we heard the sound of the outer shell dropping out of the hub.

Not sure if it was the tea ...or the welder...!
Hi, You can draw the Bearing race off the stub with a bearing puller, can you lend one from a local garage?
If your careful you can grind a groove in the inner part of the bearing, enough to get through the hardening. Then still taking care use a cold chisel and it should crack.
