You will get a service for your money.

Depends what the service entails, what does your service book say is due?
Just because they are a VW dealer does not mean they have experiance with a vehicle of you age.
Dealers charge top dollar where as a non franchised VW specialist are interesed in our type of car so give a better servuce and at a more competative price
With a 73 Beetle you're entering into the realms of Classic Cars, Find a good VW specialist. Find one who is a Beetle fan and they will usually go out of their way to help you.
Toureman
what makes you believe they do what is in the book,
i hate all garages for this, including bikes,
change your oil & relieve you of 100 plus for that - oh & stamp the all important service book, that adds about 50 to the resale value if your lucky, but in ten years time it ain't worth the hard earned you spent on them.
may keep your warranty valid tho, WOW
rant over.

300? Is that in rand, bart, pesatas, dollars, lira? Is it is Great British Pounds that sounds very steep, but if it is any of the other it may be fair.
hIi, it does not take a brain surgon to service the old beetle it is as simple as that, are you mech minded? if so do it yourself & save your money, regards the stamp thats been answered.
They are really easy to do, but if you're not mechanically minded definately take it to an aircooled specialist as tbh, many modern garages arent familiar with these vehicles. I would only expect to pay around a 100 quid for a service. This should involve the following :-

oil change
plugs
points
timing
grease front beam
adjust brakes
check fluids (brake, gearbox, steering box, washer etc)
check fan belt
handbrake adjust
valve adjustment
tyre pressures

all dead simple tbh. You should have a look for a local club as they will be able to assist or t least point you in the direction of a good garage. Take a look at www.volkszone.co.uk for starters, very helpfull.
