S Reg Rover 200 over reving

My 1.1 Rover 200 will drive normally then for no reason will go to HIGH revs as if foot was on gas hard have to switch off engine , take key out then start up again now while ideling car over revs up and down itself when it feels like it.

It could be a sensor or it could be a cracked cylinder head, more likely the head :S

I have been using the Metro/100 forum for about 12 months and some of the info is very useful, albeit you can tend to get paranoid about HGF (head gasket failure) and the like!
If the 200 is anything like the 100 then sensor failure seems to be a likely cause, possibly the throttle position sensor.
