BMW 316 compact 1999 T reg - Ting belt or timing chain?

Does this car have a timing belt or timing chain? If belt, and not shown on the service record, how can you tell if its been changed?

Same car - is it safe to rely on the green light 'service due' indicator or is it better to do it every X miles or X months.

The car is on the last green light and it was serviced 13000 miles ago in June 2006. I think the recommended interval is 15000 miles.
