Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just simply produce a home-made sign which can be displayed in the back window which states "I am vain"?

blimey flip flop,i was wondering when you would bring this up again, its a shame you cant afford one.
There are a number of things which intrigue me about this ridiculous nonsense:

Very often the alterations made to cherished number plates make them extremely difficult to recognise properly. Bear in mind that they often have to be read quickly and sometimes under difficult circumstances.

With the exception of a few very distinctive examples, in many cases the alterations leave a plate which means little or nothing to anybody other than the owner. Joe Public is left scratching his head long after the vehicle has disappeared. This means that not only can the plate not be interpreted quickly as it should be, but it cannot be recognised for what the owner thinks it should say either.

I would normally dismiss this type of practice as a bit of harmless fun. However, it is not funny if, as a result, victims of accidents or Road Traffic offences are unable to pursue the matter because a vehicle could not be identified.

The law should be more rigorously enforced than it currently is. Making the offending vehicle an MoT failure is not enough (many people with cherished plates simply replace them with legal versions just for the test).
my husband has a cherished number plate that is personal to him, but his is completely readable and legal but i do agree with you on the fact that sometimes they are not readable and that sometimes the screw that holds the plate on the car is put in such a position as to make a letter look different than it really is and therefore making it more difficult to read

I think the Americans have got this one right - they call them Vanity Plates.

ahh Norm - it has nothing to do with money and everything to do with tastefulness that I don't have one.
Your right Norman, it can't afford one, I have one, didn't cost anything, was on a car I bought years ago, seller didn't realise.
Personalised Number Plates Car number plates which feature the owner's name or initials, e.g. TED 23 and 2246 HW. These plates can cost as little as a 100 to in excess of 50,000, depending on their rarity. Under a new system due to be introduced in the near future all personalised number plates will cost 1200 and the figures and letters configuration on all of them will be 1 AM A PRETENT10US PI110CK.

An elderly lady I know was recently given an on-the-spot fine for not wearing her seat belt. She was going from one end of a local shopping street to the other when two eagle-eyed policemen spotted her. However, these officers seem unable to spot the many cars with illegal number plates that regularly park in this street. I think the drivers of these cars are taking the p*ss.
I have a personalised number plate, which was very cheap and contains my initials. I spend a lot of time in my car and rely on it hugely. Ultimately, I paid for the car, I pay to run it, and I see no reason why I cannot personalise my little bit of space. Maybe you should be complaining about people who do real harm on the roads, like uninsured drivers...
Good for you, Misty77. It is encouraging to see a glimmer of sanity sparkling amongst the dross submitted by pathetic types who have nothing better to do than gripe about the choices of others in a free society.
