Why do fire engines have chains dangling underneath? Is it something to do with static?

Hi Plowter.

Im a firefighter and i have been on many fire engines and not one of them has a chain dangling underneath it.

Where have you seen this?

Have seen them on Lothian and Borders engines. They're big, chunky chains, seem to hang down from near the main axles and are long enough to chank against the ground..
As no body else has answered I will have a go, it could be to reduce static caused by pumping thewater though the hoses. Not a good idea to get static sparks if there is petrol or gas about.
