Nobody knows for certain how the character James Bond came about, but there is a story that has - through Bond books, movies, cartoons etc - been proved likely.

James Bond was probably born in 1924. His parents were Andrew Bond and Monique Delacroix, Andrew was Scottish and Monique was Swiss. They both died as a result of a mountain climbing-accident in 1935. Orphaned at 11, James Bond moved to his aunt's in Canterbury in the English county of Kent. The boy had been registered for Eton at birth, and started there at the age of 12. After a few years he was expelled from Eton, due to an affair with one of the maids.

He then spent four years at Fettes, a school with great expectations in discipline and physical achivements. The first suited Bond poorly, but the second was just fine: He achieved good results as a lightweight boxer. He lost his virginity when he was 17 to a girl in Paris.

He left school at 17. The Second World War had just broken out. Young Bond applied for a job in the Ministry of Defence. He added two years of age to his CV and got the job. He soon became a lieutenant in the special forces of The Royal Naval Volunteers Reserves. At the end of the war he was known as Commander Bond.

After the war, Bond was hired to the secret service by M. After proving his skills by showing cold-blooded determination he became a double-0 agent, with licence to kill.

To get the 00 status Bond had to complete two missions. In New York he killed a Japanese code expert. Bond shot him with a sniper's rifle. The second and last mission was in Stockholm, where Bond had to kill a Norwegian agent who had spied for the Russians.
Terence James Bond was an author, he wrote books about birds.
Ian Fleming took the name from that.
James Bond is based on a genuine British secret service agent named Patric Dalziel Job (pronounced "Deal Jobe") he was a war hero, blowing up enemy military installments with or without his superiors' permission, much the same as the James bond we know and love! Before joining the navy, he lived with his mother in Scotland. Whilst there, he built himself a small sailing boat and left for Europe. There he became fluent in many languages and also became an expert skier. Ian Flemming met him whilst serving in the war.
