Hello! Anyone else ever sold a number plate? We have an old A reg car that the last three letters could spell someone's name. The car's worth very little - 100 maybe, so thought I'd get the plate valued, and the valuation came back at 600! But there is no guarentee of selling, but they will advertise it until sold, and add their commission onto the sale, ie. they may sell for 1100 but we'll still get 600. I just wondered if anyone had used a company to do this, was it easy or is it all a great big con?
Thanks

its the way these companies do business,i have a plate up for sale at the moment,i want 7k for it,but on the website its up for nearly 10k. i know they have to make money, but they do go over the top a bit.

Thanks Norman, to be honest we're not too worried what we get for it (although I won't tell them that!). The car was given to us for my husband to use the parts on another one of his projects, but lack of time means its sat unloved for that last 12months.
I'm not too worried about their commision either, if they sell it its a bonus to us, but wondered how long these things take, as it seems its best to keep the car rather than put the numberplate on retention, but we are fast running out of space and don't want to still have it in one years time! Another website says it must still have MOT and Tax, both of which lapsed before we got the car, and its currently on SORN.
Just wanted to know if it was a worthwhile exercise....... and get others views, I suppose.
Thanks!

if you don`t mind paying the money to put on retention 60ish) then do it.i had a plate up for sale for nearly 2 years and it still never sold.you have just got to be lucky.the other thought is put it on ebay you never now they might take the banger aswell.
putting it on retention costs 105,and i think if the car is not mot and taxed it cant be transferred to another vehicle, but im not sure, so putting it on retention might be a better option.

One more thing to add - when you retain the number, you have to 'renew' it once every year. I think it costs 80 each time - so if it doesn't get sold quickly, it could end up costing you money. But as it was a freebie, it's worth a try : )

Thanks for all the answers - still dunno what to do for the best!!
Think we'll hold onto the car and give it 6 months to see if the reg goes with one of these companies, nothing ventured nothing gained! If anyone can recommend a good company....... ?
Thanks to all again.
