I Have a boat with a vovlo penta engine 3.0l (inboard), on a recent trip i hit a big wave and a few seconds later the engine cut out, and failed to start, it started again after a while but only for a few seconds, and that was it, had to get hauled back to the marina, but still will not start, any idea anyone?

Not sure if this is a petrol or diesel engine, however, there are two possibilities. Ignition or fuel. Check petrol supply to carb, and check spark to plugs. If diesel, check diesel getting to injectors, by cracking injector open and turning over on starter.
It's not going to be anything too major I think, probably just a wire off somewhere.

sorry, did forget to mention, it is a petrol.
the next day i cleaned the petrol filter(as a couple of people at the marina said it might be crap or water mixing with the petrol), checked the spark (which seemed ok), and checked to see if the petrol was getting through to the carbs, which it was.
Could it be that the timing thing that the dizzy caps sits on was knocked out of place??
