well i would say so ! try getting some quotes or even see if you can get someone to do it as a homer !!
Hi Sashal3. At top rates, I would guess the job is worth about 70. Tell them get Stuffed.
i just remembered. i got the front brakes done on my 4yr old corsa a few months ago and the COST PRICE for the parts was under 40. and it only takes an experienced mechanic about 1/2 hour to do. i got my brakes and a back box fitted in an hour..

Thanks for your answers... trouble is, when the car was booked in they said if it was the pads, the job would cost 60 odd. Then the next thing I knew, they called my Mum (who has the car at the moment - I live about 150 miles away) and said they'd replaced the discs too and the total was 170 - the work has already been done. Mum is going to pick the car up tomorrow and pay - she hates kicking up a fuss about this sort of thing. Is there anything I can do?
if they used genuine parts, then that price is good.
well if you got pads and breaks done then ok. but i still think it is a bit expensive.
I just paid a similar amount for a Ford Escort, including replacing the flexible brake pipes. I didn't think it was over-expensive but still hate parting with money just to keep a tin box rusting away.
How did you (or your Mom) know that it needed pads? Had the garage inspected the car and told you that? If so, why did they not check the condition of the discs at the same time? Did they contact you Mother before fitting the new discs, to let her know that the job was going to be more that double? Sounds fishy to me.
If you think it's a coin , phone the garage and ask for the old pads and discs to be returned to you when you pick up the car.

Get someone to have a look at the old discs to see if they realy needed replacing.
Doesn't seem too expensive considering you needed new discs as well.

The thing about asking to see the old ones, Im sure the garage has plenty of genuinely worn discs/pads to show you if the work was unnecessary

I recently paid less than half that for brake pads and discs at a reputable garage

Hi, thanks for all your answers. The garage was ATS so it should be reputable!!!?? I don't mind the amount so much as the fact that they quoted 60 (if it was just the pads) then replaced the discs without telling us and the final bill was almost 3 times that! Live and learn!
