Have a 1994 Fiesta automatic that has been playing up for a few months. It starts ok, but at junctions decides to cut out on me. Always starts 1st time but will do it at next junction. Goes quite 'lumpy' to drive but once at about 30mph it is ok, until I have to stop. It doesn't do it every day, or every time I stop but is doing it often enough! Mechanic has looked numerous times, had 2 diagnostic tests which showed no fault codes. Each time the mechanic looks it is ok for about 3 weeks then it starts to play up again, so mechanic looks again, ok for 3 weeks or so again. It has been following this pattern for about 4 or 5 months. Have had 2 different mechanics look & neither could say exactly what the problem was. Car was only serviced in June/July. Would love any ideas as to what may be the problem. I have posted previously & the mechanic has checked the car for the advice given, yet it is still doing it. I am getting very frustrated, would get a new car if funds allowed!!

Thank you

I had a similar problem.though not with a Fiesta.I bought a Petrol Injector Cleaner by Redex which goes into your petrol tank, now my Engine runs like a Sewing Machine.Worth a try as it is only about 3.50 to buy.
It could be crap in the injectors, but it could also quite possibly be a cracked or broken wire on a connector somewhere, the crank sensor for example. The tiny break in the wire may be making contact untill you brake for a junction or roundabout, the weight transfer of the engine or wiring moving very slightly forward could be enough to cause a momentary break causing the engine to cut out, when you come to a stop the wiring returns to its position and the connection is remade.
This could also explain why the fault doesnt show up on diagnostics, for the simple reason that it isnt there when the car is sat still idling in a workshop.

I think you should run the engine then have a really good pull and poke around the wiring loom in the engine bay, especially near sensor plugs, obviously be carefull what you touch around the ignition side of things.
No guarantees but I have definitely seen this type of fault on a car before.

just a guess .. Engine coolant temp sensor.

or as Alvin says.. wire and connector plug problems in the engine bay are common too.

Thanks. All wires have been checked & are ok. Have bought some injector cleaner so will try that. I know nothing about cars, was advised that my car had injectors rather than carb, but friend says mine is carb??
mildwin,Please let us know outcome. Many Thanks.

Me again!

Have put in the cleaner, yesterday & this morning car was fine. I even got stuck in traffic & it didn't cut out once, & idling was fine. This afternoon it had, what I hope was a blip, as it attempted to cut out at a junction but I was able to pull away before it did. So not too sure whether the cleaner has helped or whether the car was just having a good morning?? Will give it a couple more days to see how it goes & if it still does it I will have to call the mechanic again.

Thanks
mildwin, you have to give car a good run,Cleaner will work then. Good Luck.

Car has been ok since putting the cleaner in, not running perfectly but much better than before. Has been fine since I first used it, until this week, when it has decided to play up again. Just cut out a couple of times at junctions/lights, but now when I put it into drive it dies. Always starts first time but then when put into drive it does it again. Any more ideas would be welcome.............
