The engine keeps wanting to/or is cutting out if you slow down and have to change gear, it seems to struggle to accelerate again and occasionally tries to cut out.

It also keeps cutting out if you do a tight left hand turn, doesn't do it for the right hand turn.

Any ideas, anyone?

I was told it was the CFI unit on the Fiesta, but what is the CFI unit?

The CFI unit is the Central Fuel Injection unit, which is a mechanical system as opposed to EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection).  The fault sounds like its either lack of fuel to the cylinders (if the CFI is faulty it could explain the left turn thing as well), or loss of compression in one or more cylinders.
