When turning the steering wheel i can feel a knock through the brake peddle The brakes have been checked so i think the problem must be in a steering column joint. Any ideas

This could be as you suspect there will be a universal joint in the steering column under the bonnet this could be loose or worn and tansferring the knock to the brake pedal.

Get someone to turn the steering wheel gently to and fro while you feel the joint but don't trap your fingers, get it checked if you cannot find out what is wrong.
As Toureman says, many Vectras wear the joint in the steering column if not greased regularly.
