Can I maintain the charge in the battery by conecting to a 240v supply?

What is the difference between this method and using a leisure charger?

If you mean direct, no.

The difference is that if you do this, it will explode and/or you'll blow all your mains fuses but if you use a charger you will charge the battery with no explosions or damage.
You could try asking on this site they may be able to help more.

Their message board has a eqiuipment section and a caravan section.
Just charge the battery with an ordinary car battery charger, that's all I ever used.
You could connect the batteries to 240v if you are trying to kill yourself(LOL)

If you are asking how to maintain the level of the batteries when they are left for long periods, you need to get a regulated 'trickle' charger. this will send a very small amount of current charge to the batteries over days or weeks, keeping them topped up, you can even buy a solar powered version which you leave in the window of your caravan, and the daylight creates a tiny electric current.

If you give the batteries a lot of stick and they run low then you need to use a more substantial car type charger over maybe 12-24 hours. Most modern chargers are regulated so that you cannot 'overcharge' the battery.
