If I wanted a logo designed for me and letterheads, various stationery etc. How much do they charge? I have heard that they often charge by the hour, if so, how long would they estimate a job like this taking?

This is a 'length of a piece of string' question, I'm afraid. There are all kinds and levels of graphic designers. I worked for a website that paid a leading 'brand design consultancy' over 100 grand to re-do the logo (not my decision, I hasten to add, but I and many others were made redundant soon after in order to cut costs. Idiots!). On the other hand, a small-ish, local GD will run up all your branding in short order and minimal cost.

My suggestion: work out how much you want to spend, rather than working out what the designers charge, and see which designers are willing to take on the commission.

Depends what you want, I would give it a go myself If I were you. I started a company and I did all the logo design and production myself using stuff like CorelDraw and Photoshop. Unless you want pictures of animals and the like then I would have a bash.

These guys provide a nice comparison of the charges of major design companies.
