could be the synchro in the gearbox (expensive) or the selector mechanism which I believe is fairly common on these. ( not expensive ). Good luck
there is a linkage under the car that wears resulting in poor gear changes, its common on these and saxo costs about 25 if my memory is right ,easy to change

thank you both! will have to get it checked out when i have some money!
get the g/box oil level checked by someone you trust not to rip you off could just be that
sounds like the selector mechanism or the oil level in your gearbox is low and just may need topping up. Get it checked as if it is the oil level you could find youself unable to select any gears and then you are left stranded.
It won't be you oil level that is low as it is the lower ratio hears that you have trouble with first - i.e. 1st and reverse. Sounds like it could be the Synchro, although it is more likely to be the gear selector mechanism as Wallis states - on the Peugeot, it is made up of several rods that fit onto balljoints - these wear, and eventually come off. I had one go on a Peugeot 306 last, and as I recall, it cost about 12
Good luck
