Skint and always broke I'm looking to buy a new secondhand car, guidelines are under 2000.00 low mileage and hopefully 98 up I would like your opinions as to what make and model I should be looking at, needs to be reliable and cheap to repair and run.
Oh only me, so something small.

Go for a Skoda. These days their re-sale value is rising, as they loose the famous 'joke' tag, but you'll be able to pick one up at a reasonable price. They are pretty cheap to run, they go for ever, and if you;re not a 'badge' snob, they are excellent value for money.

Immense choice at that age and price.
Why not do a search on eBay looking for a car with a "Buy it Now" price around 1500 to 2000 just to see what's available?
Fords are cheap and cheerful, VW & Skoda are good, but nearly everything these days is so electronically and mechanically superb that you can't really go wrong.
Just don't quote me on that!
ianess is right - plenty of choice and lots of general reliability - but for ultra reliabilty ,aswell as a good level of spec go for japanese, also the bigger the car the better value esp oversupplied fleet cars -vectra/mondeo/406/avensis/primera
There is no such thing as a new second-hand car ... it's either new .. or second-hand

At present owning my beloved but old Panda, anything in this millenium would be new to me, I was thinking on the lines of a Micra any one recomend these?
Micras are reliable as are most nissans but would you really go out in one of them ?? If so, I take my hat off to you Tubby.
micras are well built and v reliable , but not really my scene , try going for a 1.3/1.4 -they are very nippy indeed.

tali, thankyou for the web site, the micra's allready looking a bit iffy! I shall explore other possibilities. Thanks to every one who answered my plea for help (love this web site)
hiya vauxhall astra mk3 or mk3 golf. both are ultra reliable and you can get a 1.4 engine in both. they can both come with electric everything and some modern comforts. these are from 1995 onwards. you can get really really good examples for way under two grand.
