This will sound strange - but does anyone know how many gears my 2003 1.4 Nissan Micra has ?
According to the handbook - it is a 4 speed box - Yet I can get 5 ratios - top being almost 25mph/1000 rpm - I am confused

I forgot - this is not a CVT box - a "normal" automatic

Are you sure that the final 'gear change' isn't the torque converter locking?

I would say "no" - the revs drop considerably at the final "change" - from about 18mph/1000rpm (in 4th) to almost 25mph/1000 rpm (in this final ratio)
I used to have a Scorpio which only had 4 gears marked on the auto gear lever quadrant but there was a sort of overdrive on 3rd and 4th which effectivly gave it 6 gears, yours could have something similar.
Question Author
The Micra has overdrive via a switch on the gear shift - which gives a higher ratio on the top two gears anyway.........
