hi got this warning again today and then STOP flashee up, power steering went and car just stopped. Bleedin dangerous if you ask me. These electrical computor things are dodgy. Any ideas what this could be. Car was running fine until last week and had this warning come up 3 times and then it stops. Restarted after about 1 and a half hours. HELP. :( My shiny black car had to be taken away on the back of a breakdown truck!

I would look and see if you can find a forum for VW golfs.
I bought a 2nd hand car (not a Golf) recently and the guys on that particular forum new exactly how to cure each of the problems I had.
Try www.vwfixx.com
Sorry can't help but my lovely silver v5 is not very well either...I share your pain.

Emmission light can mean many things, sadly most of them quite serious. Often Cat or sometimes ECU related. Get it to a proper dealer or specialist.

I won't have a vehicle with electronics controlling it. This means my older vehicles are very reliable and simple to maintain. Modern vehicles are very efficient, powerful and easy to drive but I'm happy to trade that for the knowledge that my vehicles, and I do a lot of miles, always get there.

thanks for all your answes peeps. it turns out to be the sensor! so nothing actually wrong with car but gotta pay out for new sensor, having car taken to garage, having sensor removed and new one fitted etc. so about 200 quid for nothing so totally agree with stanleyman about the pros and cons for new/old cars.

coobeastie - hope your v5 gets better soon and its hurty goes away :(

Thanks poglet..

The car has only done 27k but it sounds like the timing chain has slipped...about a grand to investigate but no guarantee that it hasn't damaged the engine internally. Still running at the moment so will probably soldier on for the time being until I can save up some pennies (have a wedding to pay for first).

oh coobeastie, thats awful. how old is your beastie? ours is a V reg (1999). pog x p.s. is it your wedding?
If your car is still running Coobeastie then it may not be too serious, get another opinion but not from a dealer.

Thanks all and yep it's my wedding.

My V5 is a 99 on a T plate, but was a v.a.g car first and didn't do an awful lot of mileage in her first few years. She's still running (with a rattle) and still pulls away quite nicely.

I've been in touch with TSR (a volkwagen tuning company) who are based nearby and they reckon that the vw qoute is about right as it will require the gearbox to be removed. They've said a complete rebuild would be about 3k but they haven't worked on the V5s before....suppose I could always go for the Audi RS4 engine transplant (2.8 biturbo) just need to win the lottery first to pay for it :)

coobeastie - when is the wedding? got my beastie V5 back today, only sensor gone so with fitting, labour, pickup etc i'm down 175 quid but what a relief to have my purring baby back. borrowed my step sons L reg golf yesterday and what a difference. It was like driving a knife thru butter getting mine back. If I could afford it, Audi A3 would be my next bub x

Glad you're back on the road.

The weddings in August...just sorting bits out at the moment...pricey things.

I have access to a ford ka which is a bit of a come down from the vdub but will mean that I can put as little stress on the engine as possible while we have the wedding and honeymoon (New Zealand) then I'll see about getting it fixed.

Question Author
well happy wedding and honeymoon in kiwi land cb. ford ka hey! you'll have to get a sticker that says your real car is a vdubya!! trouble is you wont be able to sell the v5 as it is so you either have to repair it or lose it and start again i spose. good luck :)
