ive got an astra SRI 52 plate, my temp guage doesnt seem to move for quite a while after ive started it up, then i go on the motorway and the temp will drop right down, but then when i get back onto the smaller, slower roads it will move back tot he middle again, just wondered whether this was normal or not?

if it drops right down, it could be temp sensor fault or wiring to it. the temp of the engine will reduce on the motorway due to cold air hitting it as u do 70 or watever
New temp gauge sender units or cheap, it most probably is that, they are just under the front bumper on Astras.
If you mean the engine temperature guage then it would indicate overcooling, probably the engine thermostat is leaking past when it should be fully closed. New stat needed to give a quick warm up and a consistant normal running temperature.

temp dropping on the motorway is normal, think of the amount of air hitting the front of the rad at motorway speed, and given that you are probably in 5th gear, at low revs, the engine is not laboured. When you come to town driving, you will be up and down the gears, and revs, so the engine is more laboured.

Hope this makes sense

the thermostat is wide open and allowing the coolant to pass through rapidly. change the stat its an easy job and not expensive to buy
