Yes.... and the pistons, and the cylinder head unless you are extremely lucky. Basically the valve system stops operating (usually one inlet and one exhaust valve will be open) while the crankshaft continues to rotate. If there is not enough clearance between the open valve head and the rising piston...ouch!

I used to have a Vauxhall Victor, which was one of the first (if not the first) cars in the UK to have cam belt instead of a timing chain. Luckily, the designers realised this 'new' technology could fail, so they left enough gap between the valves and the pistons in case of such an event. Lucky for me, as my belt had some of the teeth stripped off it by the crank pulley. Just had to get towed home, then it took me about an hour to retime the engine and put on a new belt (which cost about �15). Why don't they make engines like that anymore; it would save everyone so much hassle.

Baxter4, are we talking about the "timing belt" or the "drive belt" here?

Remember, the drive belt powers devices such as the alternator, water pump, air-con, power steering.

The timing belt just has one job to do, and if it goes then the prognosis is as wacky racer says, I'm afraid.
