Because your car runs on rubber tyres it can't earth any static electric build up until you come along and act as a conductor, for some strange reason it does not effect every one but I get it all the time even in the house!

I think you can still purchase conductors in Halfords etc which fix to the car and is contact with the ground and conducts the static away...... You may of seen them fixed to the rear of cars, they look like a long thin black plastic strip with a white lightning flash on them, apparently also effective if you or fellow passengers suffer from travel sickness.

A common cause is simply due to the clothes you wear. If you wear a lot of synthetic stuff (like Nylon), then this rubs on the seats when you drive building up static.

Silly thing to say, but try and touch a piece of wood or something when you get out of the car before touvching the door

Just a little tip, when you get out of the car, keep hold of the door then step out of it, you will discharge the static from your feet, hey presto! no annoying shock, takes a bit of time to remember to do it all the time but it works
