How does a exhaust affect performance?

My car needs a new exhaust, just how much will a faulty exhaust affect the performance of a car? mine is a Astra 1.8 16v SRi and it seems to have nowhere near as much power as you would expect from a car of that spec. also it guzzles fuel like their was no tomorrow. could the fact i need a new exhaust affect both these problems? Also the transmission light comes on that indicates that the exhaust is ommitting too many gases, is that to do with the fact i need a new exhaust?
