The temperature gauge and the warning light come on after a few miles, when I took it to the garage it was showing these symptoms. They drove it for 27 miles and could find no fault. When I picked it up it showed the symptoms within 3 miles.

Letting it idle at home the electric fan was not running and the temperature seemd normal the fan cut in for a short time, but nothing seemed over hot. Could it be the temperature sender. If so is it possible to test it?

On some of the latest VAG products, the overheat light has a double act of being a low coolant light as well. Check your coolant level, you might have a burst expansion bottle.

Thanks for replying but I have solved the problem. There was nothing wrong with the cooling system it was a faulty sender to the instument panel.
