I usually shop around each year on comparison sites - Saga came out cheapest for this year. (NB. cheapest is not always best but my insurance needs are very basic)
For what it's worth: After a really unpleasant experience with a claim which eventually was paid, I steer well clear of anything by AXA or underwritten by them.
yeah AXA are really crip
The CEO to whom I wrote said, no it really is meant to work like that .....
and I went into Karl mode - - I did warn them and AXA said, "so what little guy?"

contents without owning is really really difficult
most of my neighbours er dont have it
davebro How much was it with Saga for contents?
£36
The cost depends on many factors - the size of your property, the build type, the postcode, the value of your contents, the number of people that live in the property, whether you have a recognised alarm, the amount of excess you are prepared to pay, the type of insurance that you want such as 'new for old'. Asking somebody else how much they pay is pointless.
Cheapest for me this year is Direct Line
B asked me - I told her. As I said my insurance needs are probably the most basic you can get. Not a high value overall, no expensive items, pretty secure property, only me resident, £300 excess

Contents up to £75,000
✔ Loss or damage caused by fire, flood,
explosion, subsidence, theft, malicious
acts or vandalism and escape of water
or oil
✔ Up to £20,000 for valuables in your
home
✔ Money and credit card cover up to
£500 worldwide
✔ Frozen food cover up to £500
✔ Personal liability cover up to £2 million
PS - the premium was actually £11 + £25 admin fee !!!!
davebro For the year?

Thanks guys, although I didnt ask what people pay hc but reccomendations for a good, fairly decent insurance company
hc4361 Of course, you are absolutely right, but when you are looking for the cheapest, or the the best, you phone different companies to get the best deal for you. Only for the fact I have just taken out my contents insurance, I would have tried Saga as that is a good price that davebro got with them. How much was Direct Line for you hc?
fruitsalad I would ask what people pay as it can vary so much from different companies for the same insurance.
When I made a claim the loss adjuster said I was very underinsured. Make sure you go room to room noting absolutely everything that will cost to replace if your house burnt down.

We're with Nationwide.
My buildings, contents and car are all insured with LV, always good quotes.
Prob better to do buildings & contents together if you need both but my flat is insured by the freeholder buildings-wise.
I use Marks because you don't have to do contents valuations. I have had to claim once and they were brilliant.
