I've just been for a test drive in a vauxhall insignia. I know the diesel engines in these are said to be a little bit loud but I was surprised by how loud.
So I said the the saleswoman that I didnt know if I could live with it and her response was 'you wont hear it when you have the radio on'
I can't help thinking there must be a better answer to give - what else could she have said?

Don't worry, you look pretty old, so you'll be going deaf soon, and you won't hear anything, sirens, screaming pedestrians, and this noisy-as-hell engine.
So reassuring to hear the power you have at your command.
"Think of it as listening to the throbbing heart of the modern age"
She could have said that she had hoped would wouldn't notice the problem with the car, and then shown you a diesel car in decent working order instead.

“OK let me show you a different car"
That's why you drove and didn't go into car sales TWR ;-)
Believe me Mam I have sold cars, but not as a salesman/woman,

//OK let me show you a different car//

This is what I think or at least made alternative suggestions - I told her that I was only looking at the insignia because i have been happy with my Vectra.
Missed sales opportunity I think.
Perhaps she should have offered to show you one with a proper engine.

bit rude but I was just looking up why the engine might be noisy and somebody described it as a dalek w**king in a washing machine - which amused me.
so you weren't shown get a particularly bad one, then? In that case probably nothing much else she could have said.
no that's the best answer, they all sound like a canal boat.
