I've been told my head gasket on my Vauxhall Corsa needs replacing and have been quoted 400 to 500 and then if the cylinder head is cracked it will cost more, does this sound about right from a back street garage, not even a vauxhall dealer?

I had a Corsa which needed a new head gasket, and cylinder heads redone. The total cost came to 540, including VAT from an independant garage. This price also included a 60k service, and new battery. I think the price you have being quoted is a bit steep!

find out how much for a reconditioned engine. It may be worth it.

That price is extremely steep for a head gasket.  Although I've been out the trade for quite awhile I would guess it's more around 250 including VAT, parts and labour.

i agree oh kebabmeister! time to start an answer bank garage me thinks. plenty of work to tackle on here and you could spend your half of the profits in the oktoberfest.... katiemfr, what engine is in your corsa? it will help someone give a more accurate estimate.
