I want to buy a very small amount of soil in one of those little dried disks that you add to water and it expands. But I can't remember what it's called or even what to search for! Any ideas?!

I'm probably way out, but it isn't sphagnum you are thinking of is it ?
Could it be 'jiffy Pots' you're looking for ?
It actually sounds like the 'Jiffy Pellets' that you're looking for (peat based)
They were called Jiffy 7's
If you want to avoid Peat there's always coir.
