What model moped do you own? Anyway, Probably the carburettors were frozen and that's why the engine would not run. I recommended you change the oil to full synthetic 5W-50 and to add 1% of antifreeze to gasoline and re-charge the battery to prevent problems in the future.

Couple of hints when thinking about driving in winter:
Check that the mud from the road does not block radiator fins.
Install extra length to mud guards if necessary.
Lubricate chains often. Salty water is violent on chains.
Lubricate locks often. Frozen lock makes it difficult to refuel or start. Place a strip of tape or similar over locks to prevent them getting wet. Wash the bike often. After washing, lubricate it with thin oil. Rust is ugly. Do not use your best leather jacket/similar, there is plenty of mud in the air. Keep the electrics lubricated.
Do not forget the grip heaters on for night :)
Remember to add antifreeze to gasoline (isopropanol / ethanol /?)
