hi, my husband has bought a car, needs to be taxed, he says that we should wait till 1st march so the road tax would be for 6 months, if we buy before 1st mach, we will be losing a month.
i think it is 6 months from the day we tax it, am i correct or him, thanks in advance for replies.

He is correct, sorry
Yes you would pay from 1st Feb
Can't you 'hang on' till Friday, maybe park it on your/someone else's drive?
You state on the application when you want the tax to start, until that date comes the car will need to be off the road. you will then get 6 months tax on your car.

thank you for the fast replies. the car is on our driveway, we could wait i suppose, only i thought i was right :)) thats why i wanted to double check on here as well.
Surely it will need to be SORNED if it's not taxed?
Strictly speaking it should be SORN'ed but it's only 3 days - who's going to know?

i dont know, we only just bought it and i sent the logbook to dvla for new keeper change, car was without tax when hubby bought it. its on the driveway, i hope im not in trouble then.
I'm sure you'll be fine - it's the first on Monday.
Technically it should be sorned - but if it's taxed now to start on the 1st of march I doubt anything will happen.
Friday ^ even
The DVLC will know as there will be a gap in the tax records of the vehicle and as mk1975 was the owner at the time of the gap I wouldn't be surprised if they wait until 1st March to tax, it will automatically be taxed from 1st Feb.
You can tax it to begin on the 1st two working days beforehand.
In this case, you can tax it on the 27th but make sure you ask for it to start on March 1st or they will just issue it for that day and you'll lose a whole month.
Question Author
oh well, i will find out on 1st of march when i go to the post office then. also, i dont know for how long the car was without tax, if it just only expired or was not taxed for a while. but i have sent to dvla the logbook with the date when i bought it and the sellers signature.
Did you buy it from a garage or privately mk?
Question Author
it was private seller, ladybirder.
I think you can check on the DVLA site when the car was last taxed.
If you take your ownership slip (the green slip), the MOT certificate and a certificate of insurance with you (not the schedule and not a copy) you'll have no problem taxing it.
Question Author
thanks sherrardk, i tried a wee while ago but it kept saying technical error. ill try again in morning, and thanks again for all replies.
Well surely the seller should have had it sorned. Unless of course he took the tax off to get a refund when he sold it to you.
I would go and tax it to start 1st March and see if they say anything at the PO or wherever you tax it. Either you get away with the couple of days or you don't. They can't hang you for it:-)
