Is the cost of an MOT standard across the country or is it determined by the individual garage?

Aparantly 29.25 is the max chargable,  garages can and often do charge a lot less to get the business.  Shop around!
It went up to 42.50 about 2 years ago for a car with up to 8 seats.  And yes, it's a standard price across all garages unless there is some special offer on.

42.10 is the maximum fee that can be charged by an MOT Testing Garage (for vehicle Classes IV & IVa) but basically they can charge what they like up to that amount.

There is a recommended / maximum price (42 sounds about right), but a lot of garages will charge less to get you through the door.

Incidentally, you are not technically entitled to a free retest either, although most garages will do this within a specified period of time, again just to get you through the door.
