Need a new one, which is a good one to get - anyone have any recommendations please ? I have tried the metal ones with little screws and alan keys, but they were fiddly and the sticky pads kept coming off, also tried the magnetic ones but didnt think much to them.

magnetic one from halfords
I use the magnetic ones, there may not be much to them but they get the job done!
Metal ones with screws and alan keys???? Where are you attaching it? I just use the plastic ones that when licked, stay put no problem.
I bought a snazzy rainbow coloured one off ebay, usual plastic kind that need a bit of moisture to stick to the windscreen. It never comes off once stuck until a year later when I peel it off. Purple if you wet these a bit and your screen is clean they never come off till you need them to.
Totally agree grasscarp. I'm still wondering how magnetic ones work on glass, or am I missing something?
You say you don't think much of the magnetic type but I've used these for four years, holding my tax & mot Discs. never had any problem.

chrissa, I think the part that sticks to the glass is adhesive and the part that secures the tax disc in place is magnetic
Right cazz. I've just had a look at the link. What a faff.
chrissa, The magnetic ones have an adhesive ring that you stick to the windscreen and then the holder uses magnets to attach to the ring.

P_P, Any type you use needs the windscreen to be clean before sticking it on, if you've not had any luck with any of them I'd guess you need to clean your windscreen.
I prefer it to the screws and alan keys ;)

Fast answer, thank peeps, Chrissa I had an aluminium one which fixed to inside of windscreen with clear adhesive pads, you had to remove tiny screws from the back of it each time you wanted to put a new tax disc in, looked good but very very fiddly ! The adhesive pads didnt work long though and due to the weight of it, it kept falling off the screen.
And that means clean it properly, not just a wipe with a old rag you have kicking about the car!
Chrissa, I was wondering too. Why do people go to so much trouble when good old fashioned spit will do just as good a job with the cheapy kind!
Lol gc. All my cars over the years have come with the dealer's disc holder on them. All of them spit and stick ones.

Ta Chuck! Guess the aluminium one I had was too heavy for the sticky pads too, I did try and make sure the screen was clean, but it still didnt stay put for very long.
Yes, magnetic from Halfords !
Wander into most major franchises and they'll more than likely sort you out with one showing their logo if you ask nicely.

You need to clean it with a solvent that doesn't leave a residue, so something like meths, a lot of "window cleaners" in the squirty bottles leave a film on the window to stop smearing and using them will make any adhesive fall off glass (and cause real bad glare when driving at night)
