Hi Marje

I've had dealings with Insurance Comp's myself, if they try & offer you a stupid amount, refuse, if they say thats the final amount contact your Insurance Ombudsman 0845 080 1800

Yes, doesn't mean you'll get it though.

Send as much evidence as you can to support your refusal.
You must always refuse at least the first offer !

Oops, didn't mean to send as not finished typing question.
My husband's car was stolen and not recovered. The police have told him that they've stopped looking for it, so he's now waiting an offer from the insurance company. I'm sure that they'll offer a low figure and if they do can he refuse it, citing the cost of a replacement as stated on AutoTrader or similar?
If they have offered you less for your car than you think it's worth find some similar cars for sale (mileage, model, condition etc.) and send copies to your insurer. Sometimes they will negotiate but they usually just use the trade (book) valuation.
Worth a try.
I thought most offers are based on Glass's Guide anyway? http://www.glass.co.uk/

Thanks for your quick replies. He bought the car quite cheaply for its year because it needed work doing on it, which he had done, so to replace it will cost more than he originally paid. Hopefully the insurance company will send him a sensible offer. lol
