Personally I prefer rear wheel drive, I find they have better handling and agility. I have owned a few BMW's that are all rear wheel drive and I found they weren't so good in snow and ice but alot of fun in damp conditions where it was easy to get the back end out. I'm more of a fan of oversteer as appose to understeer.

It depends what sort of driving style you want.  Rear wheel drive are more fun, but more likely to bite you especially in damp/wet/icy conditions.  Good for towing.  Usually associated with sportier cars.

Front wheel drive can be fun too and are far much easier to drive than rear wheel drive.  Majority of cars in the UK are front wheel drive.  Less wear and tear than a rear wheel drive car and generally lighter.
