Hi All,

My modeo has suddenly started making a clicking/clonking noise like I am running over a railway track. It seems to go if I accelerate hard or turn the steering hard to the right. if I drive slowly and switch the engine off you can hear a loud clonk, clonk which slows with your speed. any ideas, and is it expensive?

thanks
Annie.

CV joint on the way out.

Take it to a garage for repair.
My immediate thought is a driveshaft CV joint. Then from your description I am thinking maybe a lump in the tyre. This does happen and it would lessen with speed.
I would check tyre immediately by running a hand over it, if only to eliminate it!

Hi,
Strangely enough, I had a new/secondhand tyre fitted just before this happened. I will fit the spare tomorrow and see if that cures it. thanks for the input to both of you.

That will usually be an outer CV joint. You will have to find which side. Jack car up and check for rotational play in each joint with wheels exactly in straight-ahead position.
Some later models have a one-piece driveshaft .. so you may be looking at swapping a whole shaft.
