Hi,can you help? I went to start my car last night, but on turning the key, it just made a clicking sound. The lights etc still work, but car won't start. Got a new battery just a few months ago so don't reckon that is the problem. What else could it be. Its a citroen picasso 'w'reg..Thanks for any help.

Hi, when you put the headlights on are they they dim or very bright
Question Author
Hi exdc, probably not as bright as they should be. I used the car on Friday afternoon and it was fine.
Hello

I am not a mechanic but it does sound like there is insufficient battery power to turn the starter motor hence the clicking noise. Try the headlights and if they are very dim that would / may indicate low batt power.

Hi again, thanks for the info. But why would the battery suddenly lose power? I will get it jump start in the morning. Worried that it could be something more sinister and expensive!!!!
It might not be the battery but I take it you defo haven't left anything switched on?

Could be a loose connection on the battery or starter

No nothing left on. car beeps if anything still on when turning ignition off. Will have to get it checked out in the morning. Annoying thing is, my breakdown doesn't cover home start, has to be away from home. GGrrrrr
Push it up the road!!!
Question Author
haha....had thought of that, but too big and too heavy. Think it has to be a mile at least from home. B****y cars. always let you down when you need them most. Maybe its trying to tell me something.....something I don't want to hear!!!LOL
Could be a couple of things:
My sis-in-law had a flat battery with her 1 week old car. She doesn't always use it daily. Complained bitterly to the garage where she bought it. They came out and found that the boot wasn't properly shut and the boot light had been on for 2 or 3 days.

Another possibility is that the starter motor is jammed and needs freeing:- http://www.classic-ca...otor-maintenance.html
Tighten the conections on the battery, and make sure they are clean.
Sounds to me like it could be the starter motor the clicking sound could be the solinoid

Thankyou All for you advice. I have been out to my car this morning and the battery was cmpletely dead(no lights etc), my neighbour has jump started it and car started first time. Cannot understand why battery suddenly went flat, nothing left on,perhaps I just need to get a new one. The battery in a picasso(if you don't know-sorry), is very arwkward to get to, its under the front passenger seat and not a lot of room to get to it. Ridiculous place to put it!!

Oh well, despite giving my car a good run to charge the battery, it went flat again overnight. Took car to a friends garage, he checked the battery and 'surprise, surprise' its not holding charge. Couldn't afford a new one, so went to breakers yard and got one for £15 and £5 to fit it.....car up and running again :)
