what brakes - front or back - should be a split system - what has happenned?
Question Author
Not sure really Tony - parked car up last Thurs, everything fine. Started it up yesterday, and as soon as I accelerate there is a ominous creaking sort of noise, and I drove it a few yards, and smelled slight burning smell. Have checked all the fluids, and after that I am clueless. Any help would be really welcome.
smart - cannot really advise online - there could be lot's of causes - it just seems strange ok one day then not the next

I agree Tony - thanks anyway :0)
there might be a ford expert online soon - that can diagnose
Foot Brake ? Handbrake? if it's the foot brake there is every chance the you have a caliper piston sticking, ( Clean or replacement) Handbrake! have you driven through a flood? this can cause sticking brakes, has the car been stood a while? this another problem, water in the rear drum ( If drum brakes) can adhere to the linings, is there an obstruction within the foot brake area? check this.
seized brake cylnder?

TWR - I don't know if the brakes are sticking, but when I move off (slowly) there is a pretty loud clunking all the time, and there seems a degree of resistance. It was my own thought that maybe the brakes are jammed, as it was OK previous outing, and with the slight resistance to moving, that just came into my head. Having said that I know nothingabout cars, other than the basics. If you can offer further advice I would be grateful, but amin any cae grateful to you and the others for your replies.
Hi, first if you are unsure how to sort out the brake caliper / pistons / rear brake cylinders DO NOT TOUCH THEM, sorry for emphasizing, the piston within the brake caliper at times gets rust on the piston this in-turn rubs & sticks within the caliper walls/ casing if that's the case 7 whoever has tried to clean out the rust then a replacement is needed, you can either get a 2nd hand one but myself I would go for a replacement, that means exchanging your for the recon part as some manufacturers do, the rear brake mechanism, the rear is a different system as it also contains the handbrake / cables that are attached to the brake linings, there may be dislodged brake lining spring that may have gor to the side of the lining within the drum this could cause the sticking brake you can only find this out if you remove the road wheel & the drum, but again if you are not aware of what to do, DO NOT DO IT, you said a CLUNK!! get the drive shafts checked, what ever avenue you go down If unsure LEAVE IT and get someone who knows to sort it, too many have tried to sort out these problems & come unstuck.

OK TWR - thanks for advice. Can't do it myself, but this will help when I can afford to get it seen to.
Probably rear shoes linkages and/or cylinder(s) seized.
Start there.
