I drive an R reg Ford KA, Iv had it for nearly two years. Yesterday I had to change the fuse as my window wipers had stopped working and also change my side light bulbs. Now there is something up with my steering, it makes horrible clunking sounds and goes from being extremely heavy ( so bad it hurts my wrists) to going very light ( how it usually is)

Now iv always assumed that my car has not got power steering, but some of my work collegues have told me I have after they drove it to see for themselves the problem. So first question is...do ford Ka's of this age have power steering....2nd question is, have you any idea what has happened to my car??

Just to inform you, my clutch went on the car about a month ago and when i picked it up from the garage there was an advisory note to tell me that the lower arm was knocking and should get it repaired....do you think that this is what the problem is? I was going to book it in to have that repaired after christmas i just havent got the cash at the moment :(

As regards power steering, never let you reservoir go below minimum level, but having said that my daughter had a car with electric power steering,I think it was a honda jazz.As regards electrics, get it checked over with an auto electrician.

My electrics are sorted now, its just the steering i need to solve. Im nervous about driving it as i know its not right, Iv only been driving since may and with the cold/icy weather we are having steering problems are the last thing i need!!
If its not the fluid then I would think you have a problem.
I reckon you should join this forum...they'll most likely sort you out with this prob and any others that might pop up. Media URL: http://myka.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum.php
Description:
Hi, wipers not working? was the screen frozen? in-turn your wipers frozen to the glass! that's the cause of one problem there is overload on the motor to the point that the fuse will blow. I am being condescending here but are your tyres pressures right? Your car should have P.S. check your handbook if Electric P.S. is will tell you which fuse. The arm that I think they where talking about may be the Stabiliser link arm attached to the Gearbox or a gear box Mount, this would knock especially on setting off, if this was a lower Drop arm / suspension arm, if the Garage was a decent garage they would have told you that this is a safety item that needs replacement ASAP.
Sorry,I AM NOT BEEN CONDERSENDING I SHOULD HAVE SAID.
Hi Loren,

You can confirm if your car has power steering by turning the steering wheel lock to lock with the engine off and again lock to lock with engine idling. The effort you need to turn lock to lock with engine idling will be less.
The state of the suspension arm bushes can easily be checked by jacking up (on axle stands if you can) the front end of your car.
By turning the drivers side wheel to the left you see the bush under the foot well area.
By turning the passenger wheel to the right you will see the on this side.
While turning your wheels feel for up and down play on the shock absorber upper pivot bushing/bearings for smoothness.
The suspension bushes with the wheels off the will be under load but should be firm in tha arms and mount pins.
If the arm rests on the sub frame thats more likely to knock.
