Both engines are good, the diesel uses less fuel, is noisier, not as fast.

The petrol uses more fuel, is quieter, slightly faster.

Make your mind up time.
Focus is an excellent choice - I had the 1.8 petrol and it was really lively and good on fuel.
The main advantage regarding diesel engines is more mpg, but with present fuel prices don't overlook the extra cost for diesel at the pumps.
I had a choice of going for a Focus Petrol or diesel a while ago - decided to stick to petrol due to the fact I didn't do a high mileage to offset the higher cost of fuel.
I recently purchased a 1.8 TDCI and it's very fast and good on fuel too, prior to that i had a 1.8 TD ford escort, I have never had problems with any diesel engines, they are louder yes, but I have never encountered any problems with them.
